Building a Capsule Wardrobe

Often when we are buying clothes we leap towards the first thing that catches our eye , whether it’s the colour, the pattern or the style, something about it grabs our attention and we just have to have it –  we are all very guilty of this! This is fab but are we thinking about how this purchase will work with the rest of our wardrobe? Chances are no – and then you won’t be able to wear it with your current wardrobe!

Worry not! Here at Kit and Kaboodal we are all about encouraging you to build the perfect capsule wardrobe so that you can wear your items time and time again. The beauty of our clothing is that it layers perfectly so that you can wear the same item, but style it in multiple ways for different looks.

So how do you do it? First of all you have to think about the basic pieces to layer. This is where you need long sleeve tops, vests, basic sweat tops and dresses. With these basics the key is to stick to neutral colours such as black, blue, cream and white. These colours work so well with different shades and can immediately darken or lighten your look depending on which way you want to go.

The other basic pieces you need are jeans and leggings. Once again go for a subtle colour palette and stick with skinny jeans. Even if you’re more curvaceous, these jeans look great with our items because they are only visible from the knee down, keeping your silhouette and creating a flattering shape.

Once you have cracked the basics it’s all about your key pieces. This is where the fun starts and you can buy the pieces you really love! The best way is to work on a colour palette, so team blacks with greys and  blues with white and brown. Once you have your starting palette you can thrown in some bright colours to liven it all up! Here’s some ideas we love…

Here we have the Holkham 2 Floral Dress that you can wear on it’s own for a lovely bright and colourful style or, for another look, add the Only Basic Long sleeved top! To make it cosy you can add the Leggings in Charcoal and layer over the Livorna Cowl Neck Top for a great multi layered daytime look! If you are going our for tea,  take away the Holkham 2  and the Leggings, add some Only Skinny Jeans, heels and jewellery and you’re good to go! Four items, four different looks!

We have taken the same ideas as above and done the same look working on a blue colour palette. Start with the Only Basic Lace Trim Tank Top and the Only Basic Skinny Jeans in Mid Denim. You can then create a really easy look by adding the Novara Knot Longline Shirt – wear it fastened and add some shoes and a bag! For another look wear the shirt open and add a patterned scarf such as the Natalie for a touch colour. To take these basics in another direction add the Ballybunnion Cotton Tunic in a bright colour such as the lime. You can wear this tunic with the scarf to give you multiple wears out of the same accessory.

Once you’ve mastered the art of these capsule wardrobe looks you can start to mix together to create even more looks! For example…

Now you’ve got all the building blocks to go wild with your capsule wardrobe and create some great looks. You’ll have an idea of what colours to match and what styles you can layer to build more looks from a few key pieces. This is a great concept to carry out for holidays too, you can pack light and make sure you get as much wear out of each piece while you are away!

We hope you’re inspired to clean out your wardrobe, pick out your capsule pieces and buy some key styles to wear this season!

Love,

Kit and Kaboodal
